Vodka and Red Bull: The Night Saver
I used to wonder how my friends would would have the energy to be dancing to bad house music at 7am after a long night out.
Then I started drinking Vodka Red Bulls.

I didn’t even like vodka at all until I tried it with Red Bull. If I take a straight shot I usually fight off a bad face for about a minute. This might have to do with the fact that it tastes like hairspray scented cologne.
A friend of mine once filled a bottle of Grey Goose with Smirnoff and at his party everyone couldn’t stop talking about how much better the “Grey Goose” tasted. This doesn’t say much for my friend, but it doesn’t say much for vodka lovers either.
The Vodka Red Bull
So I found a new respect for vodka when my friend ordered me a Vodka Red Bull. The Vodka Red Bull is usually served 5:1 ratio in a high balls glass. Finally the tastes of both vodka and Red Bull gave way to a calmer mix- which is good since vodka had been pretty hard to avoid especially in the club scene. The best part was that the Red Bull gave me an extra push to keep going longer into the night.
Every bar seems to have a different name for it. I like just Vodka Red Bull because it’s hard to mess up that order. My least favorite is Speedball because you sound like a total tool. If you’re into the club/lounge world you’re no stranger to this night-saver. But it’s crept more and more to the far depths of even dive bars. If you haven’t tried mixing vodka and an energy drink together, now’s the time.
The Benefits
This one goes out especially to the DD’s. Being the driver doesn’t always mean that you can’t enjoy a drink hours before leaving without it being a problem. But adding the Red Bull kicker helps you stay even more focused throughout the night making that drive home much more tolerable. I’ve often found it beneficial to even finish the night with a straight Red Bull if there are any kind of after bar/club activities happening. It feels like you just woke up from a quick nap.
And that refreshed feeling has its benefits even if you’re not going to be driving. Whether it’s stubborn bouncers, the annoying bar crowd, bathroom lines, or even drunk friends, having your thoughts in check while out at night and having the collected edge is nice. A study shows that this could all be because the element taurine found in the Red Bull might be an anti-anxiety agent.
Side Effects
So while you’re consuming industrial amounts of caffeine, you actually come off more level headed and relaxed than you would if you were drinking the alcohol straight. But another study shows that the combination can prove to be a little misleading. Essentially, the perceived clarity and relaxed mode you get into has no effect on the fact that you’re still drunk and your “performance errors” still apply. In fact, this study points out that the caffeine might even give you a false perception of how drunk you actually are.
The worst side effect? You might actually find yourself dancing to bad house music at sunrise too. Can’t blame you.
