A College Drinker Review:

Chocolate Stout

Sitting around with the College Drinker staff the other day, conversation drifted to the things we really love in life. Alot of ideas were tossed around: cake, sex, Doritos. But in the end, we narrowed it down to only two things - beer and chocolate.

I thought, why not combine the two into one indestructible super entity? I was feeling very good about my idea, but someone mentioned that “there’s already a chocolate stout.” Well, even if I wasn’t going to profit from the idea, I could still enjoy it. I set out immediately to find this beautiful creation and drink it. Little did I know it would turn into the greatest adventure of all time!

Finding the Chocolate Stout
It turns out that regular chocolate stout doesn’t necessarily have chocolate in it. It’s simply a name given to some stout beers based on color and types of malt used. But there are some brewers that do make real-chocolate-added chocolate stout.

It was easy to find in the local liquor store. With bottle in hand, I popped open the cap, and in a frenzy of excitement, took a deep inhale of the aroma. Mmm, chocolatey. And beery. After a healthy cheers to those around, I took my first gulp. It tasted like…well, chocolate and beer. At this point I realized that in the frenzy of anticipation, I never really thought the combination through… Not really that great. But dutifully, I sat and drank.

When to drink it
In its defense, the more I drank, the more I liked it. It was bitter, yet sweet. “Bittersweet” is maybe the right word for it. After consideration, chocolate stout is not an entirely useless beverage. All beer has some purpose. Turns out there are plenty of good times to drink chocolate stout. Like when someone tells you it exists and you get really excited and want to try it. Go for it, it was worthwhile.

Also, maybe you’re having a themed party. Have a Chocolate-or-Vanilla party, make people wear black or white, serve ice cream. You could get some Chocolate Stout for that. I think I’d make it a specialty item though; its appeal may not be broad enough to be the main staple of the chocolate beverages. Go with spiked chocolate milk instead. Or just beer, beer is good.

With regard to the “greatest adventure of all time” I mentioned, I may have exaggerated. We pretty much just got drunk and played darts.

You guys are crazy! Young’s chocolate stout is one of the ten best beers I have evr tasted. Granted, in college I thought Red Dog was a great beer. I go to a bar that only serevs microbrews, and am always excited when Young’s is on tap. Anyway, keep drinking!
